71,271 fanatical hockey die-hards packed Ralph Wilson Stadium on New Year’s Day, 2008 to witness the first ever NHL Winter Classic, pitting the Buffalo Sabres against the Pittsburgh Penguins with Sid the Kid’s shootout goal becoming a lasting image of the contest. Offered here, is this Penguins worn during the pre-game warm-up by notable enforcer, Georges Laraque. A Reebok made offering, a single size “58+” tag has been affixed to the inner collar while the crests of both the NHL shield and Reebok adorn the front and back necklines of the tie-neck garment respectively. Decorated over the front with a vintage style Penguins team crest that features embroidered details, the all-important 2008 Winter Classic event patch has been added over the right breast while the sleeves and verso have been accented with Laraque’s number “27” in dual layer tackle twill numerals with “Laraque” spelt out in matching style across the affixed matching nameplate. Having been worn for just the pre-game warm-up and not the game itself, the jersey shows no obvious signs of being worn and remains in beautiful condition. Of note, very light imprints of a Penguins front crest are seen when closely examining the back numbers, likely from being compressed up against the crest of either this jersey or another one at one time or another. Showing a Penguins team tag sewn inside the reverse hem, a MeiGray patch numbered “E05817” is sewn alongside it as well with the company’s population report listing the jersey as a “Blue Throwback – Winter Classic 1/1/08 (Warm-Up)” offering. Accompanied by an NHLPA COA and letter, the jersey has been photo-matched to an included 8” x 10” image of Laraque taken during the warm-up that shows the loose thread at the top of the bottom portion in the “2” on the right sleeve.
