Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/29/2023
Captivating for sure are uncut hockey card sheets, with so many memorable cards featured among the 396 comprising these three sheets from 1982-83, the last season of the New York Islanders dynasty, with their 4th straight Stanley Cup coming over Wayne Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers, who would knock off the Islanders the next year to start their own period of Cup dominance. Each measuring roughly 28 1/4" in width and 43" in length, the sheets remain in overall pleasing condition and have avoided most of the unsightly errors that one would expect of something such as this but wear and tear is displayed via things such as creases, edge wear, corner wear and some very small examples of surface wear. A set headlined by the key rookie cards of players such as HOFers Grant Fuhr, Ron Francis and Dale Hawerchuk, all three (3) first-year cardboard examples are free from creases with the Fuhr seen beside the card of Ray Bourque while both Francis and Hawerchuk are present on the same sheet. Of note, the cards of both Francis and Hawerchuk while free from creases do show some surface wear and scratches that is worth pointing out for accuracy. Moving into the realm of superstars, the sheet that has has "Side A" penned to it on the one edge in black marker features the main series card of Wayne Gretzky along the top and is spared from large creases (some are seen above it near the edge of the sheet) though does show a surface dent. Additionally, "The Great One" is joined on the same sheet by the likes of Guy Lafleur, Gilbert Perrault, Denis Savard and Marcel Dionne in the same top row as well as Oilers teammates Glenn Anderson, Paul Coffey and Jari Kurri farther down the sheet. With the sheet showing the many leader cards of Gretzky perhaps the most enticing of the trio with all avoiding major flaws after inspection, showing just some light surface wear, multiple options await you with these neat conversation starters if you’re the high bidder here!
