Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023

A shining light in otherwise hockey-desolate West Virginia, the Wheeling Nailers began life as the Winston-Salem Thunderbirds in 1981, originally playing in the now-defunct ACHL. A number of relocations have occurred throughout their existence, with the Thunderbirds becoming the Nailers in 1996 while conference championships have been achieved in both 1993 and 2016. Offered here, is this collection of Nailers jersey including game-worn offerings of Brendon Hodge from 2004-05 and Aaron Boogaard from 2007-08 as well as a “Steelers Night” pro on-ice style theme jersey from 2005-06 that has been customized as an Andy Chiodo specimen. Starting with the game-worn SP Apparel made garments, SP labeling and a Pro sizing tags sit along each collar, with SP, ECHL and MeiGray crests over the reverse bottom hem. Styled with a Jasonesque hockey mask team crest - reminiscent of the Friday the 13th protagonist - with crossed spikes in the background, everything is done in tackle twill and embroidered details are also exhibited throughout. Sporting a myriad of sponsorship patches over each jersey, both have had Pittsburgh Penguins crests added over the right shoulder while on the Boogaard jersey a Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins patch has been added as well. Additionally, the Boogaard has had an ECHL 20th anniversary patch applied over the left breast while the Hodge offering displays an alternate captain’s “A” in the same area. Having been accented over the sleeves and verso with each players number in tri-layer stacked tackle twill numerals, both players have had their surnames spelt out in single layer black twill letters across affixed nameplates over the upper reverse of their respective sweater. Showcasing game-wear throughout each, things such as stick marks, board burns, paint transfers and staining is observed. For the Chiodo jersey, dating from the 2005-06 season, the black and gold garment is reminiscent of the jerseys worn by the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers. Made by SP, brand and size “60” labels are affixed to the inner collar which still have the original retail hang tags affixed. Featuring a familiar Nailers logo over the front, a Penguins crest has been added over the right shoulder and SP plus ECHL crests are observed over the reverse hem. Accented with Andy’s number “40” over the sleeves and verso, “Chiodo” is spelt out in white twill letters across the affixed matching nameplate on the reverse. In new with tags condition, no flaws are present.
