Serving at His Majesty's pleasure, the Governor General of Canada is the federal viceregal representative of the Canadian monarch who performs most of his constitutional and ceremonial duties in the King's name. We have a collection of notes, letters and Christmas cards signed by past Governor Generals of Canada. Included, we have a handwritten signed note from Victor Cavendish, 9th Duke of Devonshire, a 19th century handwritten signed fold-over letter from James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin (some paper loss at the fold), a 19th century signed handwritten letter from John Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham, a 19th century handwritten signed letter from The Marquess of Dufferin, a handwritten and signed letter from Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice, 5th Marquess of Lansdowne, an 1860s "Crown Sale Grant" that appears signed by Edmund Walker Head?, a Christmas card signed by Roland Michener, an index card signed by Vincent Massey, a lengthy handwritten 19th century government document that appears signed by Charles Monck, 4th Viscount Monck, a 1988 typed letter signed by Edward Schreyer, a 1962 government Christmas card signed by Georges Vanier, an 1853 handwritten letter signed by Edmund Walker Head, a large certificate from 1983 signed by Edward Schreyer (15" x 19"), and two other signed notes. Most of the signatures display nicely, with expected wear to the documents/letters themselves. To build a collection this formidable that features rare documents from important Canadian politicians is a daunting task. The work has been done for you, as this lot serves as an instant collection of impressive Canadiana.
