Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/19/2023
A grouping spanned from pre-war to post-war with examples dating between 1923-24 to 1979-80, offered here is this collection of sixteen (16) cards that includes prestigious names like Sprague Cleghorn, Howie Mornez, Cyclone Taylor, Ken Dryden, Dickie Moore and Bobby Orr among others. Starting with the oldest cards from the 1920s, examples are present for Sprague Cleghorn (1923-24 William Patterson V145-1 - PR to FR), Jim Herberts (1924-25 William Paterson V145-2 - FR condition range with glue/paper residue over the front) and George Carroll (1924-25 Maple Crispette V130 - RC - FR condition range with large creases) while the 1930s include the likes of Dave Kerr and Pit Lepine from the 1933-34 World Wide Gum Ice Kings V357 set with the Kerr serving as his rookie card, observed as being in the condition range of PR to FR due to paper loss on the front while the Lepine is around the neighbourhood of VG-EX with a crease below the English text on the back. Finishing up the pre-war specimens, a Howie Morenz photo from the Crown Brand hockey photos series released between 1935 and 1940 is included, presenting as a low-grade offering due to the cardboard backing being trimmed and the photo being reglued to a board but alas still displays well. For the ten (10) post-war cards, dating between 1953-54 and 1979-80, the group includes a copy of Cyclone Taylor's "All-Time Greats" card from the 1960-61 Topps set that has been inspected and slabbed by PSA, who have deemed it worthy of an EX-MT 6 designation, the holder shows light marks over both sides worth mentioning for accuracy. For the rest of the cards, including those of Ken Dryden (1972-73, 1977-78 and 1979-80 Topps), Frank Nighbor (1960-61 Topps), Johnny Bucyk (1971-72 OPC - signed over the front in black marker), Bobby Clarke (1971-72 OPC), Bobby Orr (1975-76 OPC), Dickie Moore (1959-60 Parkhurst) and John Pierson (1953-54 Parkhurst), all appear to be in the condition range of at least EX with many better, closer towards EX-MT after inspection in our opinions.
