Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/19/2023
Known in French Canada as “Le Gros Bill” and often regarded (with little opposition we may add) as one of the ten greatest players in the history of the National Hockey League, Jean Beliveau would win an astounding seventeen (17) Stanley Cup championships throughout his life in hockey including ten (10) as a player for the storied bleu, blanc et rouge. Proudly offered here, is this collection of Jean Beliveau autographed items totalling twenty-one (21). With some of the most interesting items coming in the form of a trio of magazines printed during Jean's playing career, including issues of Hockey Illustrated (January 1963), Hockey Blueline (April 1959) and Sports Illustrated (January 23rd, 1956) - all three magazines feature Jean on the cover with him black or blue marker ink autographs to them at some point later on in life with all three remaining legible while the signature on the Hockey Blueline is light from fading/age as is the one on the issue of Hockey Illustrated. Of note, all three (3) magazines are newsstand issues with no address label that remain in good condition with expected handling wear observed. Next, a copy of Les Canadiens magazine from the 1997-98 season as well as a Beliveau 50 years tribute booklet from Montreal's contest against the Toronto Maple Leafs on October 18th, 2003 are both included, both showing Jean over the front cover and showing light handling wear while Beliveau's easily recognizable autograph is present in silver marker over both covers with both displaying well and without issue. The rest of the collection, all photographs that range in size from 8" x 10" up to 11" x 14" with all remaining in excellent condition, depict scenes including Stanley Cup and trophy presentations, action shots, dressing room photos, his youth, Christmas and tributes (with Maurice Richard and Guy Lafleur, who has also signed his image alongside Jean), all have been signed in a mix of blue, black or silver ink autographs that all display well with a couple including annotations such as "10 Cups" and "HOF 1972". A fantastic lot for any Canadians or HHOF autograph collector, a Classic Auctions LOA will accompany the collection.
