Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023

One of the most beloved Canucks in history, Stan Smyl spent parts of 13 seasons with Vancouver, and retired as the Canucks' all-time leader in games played, goals, assists and points – all of which have been since surpassed by Trevor Linden and Markus Näslund. This Canucks captain's jersey was worn by Smyl in 1986-87. No labeling is affixed to the collar, with the sweater measuring-out to roughly a size 52, with a CCM crest over the reverse hem along with a patch to honour Canadian hero Rick Hansen. Featuring an attractive Canucks team crest with embroidered detailing, “12” appears over the sleeves and verso in layered tackle twill, with “Smyl” across the affixed nameplate in matching material. The jersey shows just a few washed-out marks, with the accompanying letter of provenance noting that the longtime owner purchased this sweater in the 1980s and had it professionally dry cleaned after purchasing, thereby removing most of the game-wear. We should also note that a few sporting goods stores in the Vancouver area (Scoffins was one) purchased a number of Canucks sweaters in the 1980s/90s along with nameplates and equipment from the team. There were loose nameplates ranging from complete examples to some missing letters. These stores put nameplates back on jerseys based on what they thought belonged, and if they didn’t have a complete nameplate, they took loose letters and applied them to the plate. As such, this jersey shows signs of a former nameplate, with the current restored nameplate possibly not the original for the jersey. There is no signs of number changes, and with Smyl wearing the #12 from 1979-91, the jersey was definitely worn by the star, with his number retired by the club after his use.
