Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
Instrumental in the early evolution of the game by developing an improved model puck, Art Ross first officiated after retiring as a player, with his time as the guru of the Boston Bruins preceded by a position behind the bench of the Hamilton Tigers for a single season, in 1922-23. Likely the only surviving example in existence, we have an exceedingly rare photo of the legendary player and executive, and it originates from the collection of the former curator of the Hockey Hall of Fame, Lefty Reid. At 4” x 6” and pictured in the full uniform of the Hamilton Tigers, the image boasts nice clarity, with “Art Ross Coach” handwritten over the reverse, along with a “Hamilton” notation. This is THE ONLY PHOTO WE HAVE EVER SEEN OF THIS ART ROSS IMAGE.
Remaining in very pleasing condition, the photo shows toning over the front and reverse, along with a bit of corner wear and a small ½” edge tear on the right side.
Taking what he described as "a basement full of old sticks and pucks" to create a world class museum after the retirement of the Hall of Fame’s first curator, Bobby Hewitson, in 1967, Maurice H. "Lefty" Reid was raised in Leamington, Ontario, and began volunteering at the Hockey Hall of Fame after moving to Toronto where he worked as a sports layout editor, at The Toronto Telegram. Serving as secretary for the Hockey Hall of Fame selection committee as well as curator during his tenure at the Hall, Reid also held many positions with ASMHOF (Association of Halls of Fame and Museums) including President and Vice President. Later honoured with a key to the city of Peterborough after voluntarily helping to create a new sports hall of fame in the locale, Reid was honoured with induction into the Peterborough and District Sports Hall of Fame, in 2006.
