Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023

With its iconic and instantly recognizable blue borders as well as having a 396-card checklist that includes the key rookie card of the game’s all-time greatest player, Wayne Gretzky, it’s easy to see as to why O-Pee-Chee’s 1979-80 hockey release is high up on every collectors want list. Found here in a complete 396-card assembly is this 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee set that is highlighted by Gretzky’s rookie card that has been assessed a mark of EX-MT 6 after being inspected by the graders at PSA. Displaying off-center from left-to-right, the card, showing Wayne during the previous season playing with the Oilers in the WHA, retains vivid colours and corners that are still relatively sharp while not being able to escape the rough cut edges O-Pee-Chee sets of the era are known for. Having been just graded, the holder remains flaw free. For the other 395-cards making up the rest of the set, the group is seen as being in an overall condition range of EX to EX-MT and EX-MT to NM with a couple of exceptions. For the key cards, those of 50-Robinson, 185-Hull (rough cut edges), 200-Lafleur (diamond cut), 220-P. Esposito and 230-Bossy (light diamond cut) are all viewed as being in the range of EX-MT to NM while the cards of 125-Clarke (90-10 centering), 150-Dryden (print mark at left border), 160-Dionne (completely off-center) and 175-Howe are a bit worse off at EX to EX-MT. For the last of the notables, card #40 of Borje Salming is seen as being in the proximity of VG to VG-EX, largely due to factory wrinkles at the top of the card. Of note, all three checklist cards are marked while the team checklist cards, including those of the new teams, are all unmarked and like the other stars in the checklist, are in a condition that is consistent with the rest of the set.
