Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/19/2023
Surfacing less often than their World Hockey Association counterparts and leading this ensemble are cards that came folded in 5-card panels and found in Quaker Cereal boxes during the WHA’s second season. Found to be in high-grade condition with some light toning evident, the only small condition exceptions are found on panel 6-10 with card #6 of Andre Lacroix showing a very tiny crease, on panel 10-25 with card #21 of Jan Popiel showing a very tiny crease and on panel 41-45 with card #45 of Reggie Fleming having very slight corner wear while the notables of the group include the likes of Bobby Hull, Gerry Cheevers and JC Tremblay. For the rest of the lot, complete sets of O-Pee-Chee’s 1974-75 and 1976-77 WHA sets are also included. For the earlier 1974-75’s the group, the 66-card group is largely in a uniform high-grade EX-MT to NM condition with the one exception being that of card #9 of Gerry Pinder, which has a small dent worth mentioning. Including the key cards of 50-Hull, 53-Checklist (unmarked – 60-40 centering) and 64-Plante in the condition range of EX-MT to NM, the key lead-off Howe Family card is viewed in the range of VG-EX to EX due to a light crease and spots on the back while card #40 of Frank Mahovlich is around the scope of EX to EX-MT because of a small dent on the top border. For the 1976-77 set, 132-cards make up the checklist with the set offered here having had approx. 50-cards signed but too many of the signatures are inconsistent when compared to other examples and therefore are NOT offered as signed cards by the players themselves. In an overall high-grade condition range of EX and EX-MT to NM cards, the key cards include the likes of 34-Plante, 65-Hull AS, 66-Howe AS, 110-Mahovlich (80-20 centering) and 131-Checklist (unmarked – 70-30 centering) all in the scope of EX-MT to NM condition while card 100 of Gordie Howe is a tad lower grade in the neighbourhood of EX to EX-MT due to a small top right corner ding. The assembly is finished out by an EX range copy of card #1 of Bubby Hull that has a ding to the bottom left corner and light border wear while card #20 of Gerry Cheevers is seen as in the range of GOOD due to being creased. Lastly, an empty 1975-76 O-Pee-Chee WHA wax box is included to conclude the lot. Displaying with “Hockey” along the top with in action images as well as the league logo, the fold up display has been ripped at the right arm with both having been taped at one point. Once housing 48 wax packs, the box top comes off while the original factory tape is seen over the front edge. In overall good condition otherwise, creasing is seen over all four sides with light soiling on the bottom as well.
