Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
Always an enticing set for collectors to add to their inventory, the 1970-71 O-Pee-Chee release consisted of bright colours and a 264-card checklist, with this near complete assembly of the release up for grabs here. Presenting in a mix of condition ranges that go from FR to G up to VG-EX to EX with some better and worse examples present as well, many of the cards show creases and corner wear while the edges of the group show rough discoloured edges. Starting with the set’s key rookie cards, the first-year cardboard of Brad Park (G to VG – creased), Gilbert Perreault (G to VG – creased), Guy Lapointe (VG to VG-EX – complete O.C. and miscut), Bobby Clarke (VG-EX to EX – light corner wear) and Darryl Sittler (G to VG – small crease bottom left) are all included and accounted for. Continuing on with the notables, cards 11-P. Esposito (off-center top-to-bottom) and 20-Mikita (90-10 centering) are the best of the bunch, with the pair being seen in the scope of EX to EX-MT condition and followed by the likes of 3-Orr (light corner wear), 15-Hull (light corner wear) and 248-Orr Norris (light corner wear) in the vicinity of VG-EX. to EX while 55-Beliveau (bottom left corner ding) and 135-T. Esposito (corner wear) check in around the scope of VG to VG-EX. For the rest of the cards, the specimens of 78-Parent (creased), 236-Orr All-Star (creased), 238-Howe All-Star (small crease bottom right), and 252-Orr Conn Smythe (creased) are all in the range of G to VG while card #29 of Mr. Hockey is viewed as FR to G due to being creased. For the checklist cards, both are considered as fillers with both marked while one is badly creased and the other is cut/trimmed and creased. Missing cards 166, 188, 192, 199, 246-Orr and 249-Orr for a complete set, a wonderful trip down memory lane awaits our lucky winning bidder.
