Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
The rookie cards of three well-known coaches and six now Hall of Fame players have always contributed to the popularity of O-Pee-Chee’s 1974-75 issue, for the first time a big 396-card effort. Made up of mostly mid-grade range offerings with some better examples included for the raw ungraded graded cards, the group is paced by a group of twenty-three (23) cards that have been graded by KSA, in which the raw cards making up the rest of the set seem to be in the same range of, that includes many of the notables. Features the first-year cards of HOF coaches Don Cherry, Scotty Bowman and Bernie Geoffrion that have been assessed marks of NM 7, NM+ 7.5 and NMM+ 8.5 respectively, the six key rookie cards of HOF players is led by the likes of Denis Potvin, who’s card has earned a MINT 9 designation and is followed by Steve Shutt (NMM+ 8.5), Bill Barber (NMM 8), Lanny McDonald (NM 7), Borje Salming (NM 7) and Bob Gainey (NM 7). For the rest of the slabbed offerings, we have a copy of card #321 picturing Henri Richard that is labeled a MINT 9, a NMM+ 8.5 of #25 Gilbert Perreault, NMM 8’s of #200 Phil Esposito and #248 Bobby Orr Norris Trophy, NM+ 7.5’s of #20 Stan Mikita, #130 Bobby Orr All-Star, #155 Ken Dryden, #170 Tony Esposito, and #232 Guy Lafleur, a single NM 7 of #40 Darryl Sittler, ENM+ 6.5’s of #54 Checklist 1-132, #100 Bobby Orr and #164 Checklist 133-264 and a lone VGE 4 of #311 Checklist 265-396. Additionally, a portion of the raw cards have not been able to escape the rough cut edges and off-centering that O-Pee-Chee releases of the era are notoriously plagued by while a small number also show creases that is worth noting for accuracy. Lastly, all the team checklist cards are unmarked and in conditions that are consistent with the rest of the set as are any unlisted stars.
Additionally, also included with the set is complete set of 1974-75 WHA O-Pee-Chee cards. With 66-cards found in the checklist, the set is paced by KSA graded offerings of #50 Bobby Hull (KSA MINT 9), #30 Gerry Cheevers (KSA NMM+ 8.5), #40 Frank Mahovlich (KSA NMM+ 8.5), #53 Checklist 1-66 (KSA NMM+ 8.5), #1 The Howes (KSA NM 7) and #64 Jacques Plante (KSA ENM 6). For the rest of the cards, like their NHL counterparts, the raw offerings appear to be in the same grade ranges after inspection and display with no obtrusive major flaws or creases while sporting some corner wear/ding and the odd edge ding as well. All the KSA holders remain in excellent condition with just a few showing light scratches/scuffs that is worth pointing out for accuracy.
It must be noted that the grading standards followed by KSA may not correspond to those currently employed by PSA, BGS or SGC. The outcome of an attempted cross-over of this piece through any of those services, then, would be uncertain and cannot be guaranteed.
