Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
Three youngsters who appeared on Topps baseball cards for the first time in 1983 and who would end up with a plaque in Cooperstown highlight Topps’ close-to-800-card regular ’83 issue, with the rookie cards of the late great Tony Gwynn, Ryne Sandberg and Wade Boggs the most desirable pack pulls if you decide to have some pack-opening fun. Second-year Cal Ripken Jr. cards are another possibility, with Ryan, Rose, Schmidt and other Hall of Famers also in the mix and the appearance of Super Veteran subset cards (35) a nifty addition. Willie McGee and Frank Viola RCs also contribute, with 15-card packs totaling 36 inside the offered box. The unopened specialists at Baseball Card Exchange recently examined the packs and deemed them unopened and then sealed the box with the company’s shrink wrap. Featuring the image of Reggie Jackson’s card four times, the display box has been preserved in attractive condition with light surface wear and colour loss being exhibited on all four sides as well as the top lid. Sporting a fold up display lid that appears to be only partially perforated upon inspection, creasing is seen on the front side of the box, heaviest at the bottom and bottom left corner while the rest of the piece shows just light wear to its corners and edges worth pointing out. With the packs inside originally costing only .30 cents, the bottom of the box shows the BBCE information label and hologram that has been affixed over the cellophane wrapper with the surface of the box underneath showing similar to the rest with just light surface wear/toning being observed. A true surviving treasure, the only question that remains for our lucky winning bidder is whether or not to bust this beauty open upon receiving it. Good luck!
