Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
Sporting a 264-card checklist, Topps’ 1980-81 hockey release featured something that had never been tried in any sport's base set, trying to determine whether there was any interest in the concept, the company placed a scratch-off area over the player's name. An overall consistent EX to EX-MT assembly, cards picturing Wayne Gretzky are found scattered throughout the checklist along with other key star and rookie examples. Featuring the first-year cardboard of Ray Bourque, Michel Goulet and Mike Gartner, Ray’s rookie card is found to be in the neighbourhood of EX-MT to NM while Goulet’s is around EX to EX-MT with a top left corner ding bringing it down slightly. Gartner’s RC is a condition exception, registering around the range of VG to VG-EX due to a top left corner ding and a small dent. Additionally, Bourque’s record breaker card is also found to be in the vicinity of EX to EX-MT condition with slight wear to two of the four corners. For the rest of the notables to be listed, all picture “The Great One”, led by his record breaker card that is found at #3 on the checklist, the card is found in the range of EX-MT to NM condition while showing with 95-5 centering. Cards #’d 87-Gretzky All-Star (top left corner ding), 182-Team Leaders (large ding to the top right corner) and 250-Gretzky Base (very slight top left corner ding) are all in the scope of EX to EX-MT while cards #162 and #163 both Gretzky League Leader offerings, are in the range of VG to VG-EX due to dings and dents worth mentioning for accuracy. All housed in plastic nine slot binder pages, many of the cards show small corner dings but it is hard to see when they are housed in the aforementioned pages. All the cards are found unscratched while the main series checklists and team checklist cards all remain unmarked.
