Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023

Displaying its iconic blue coloured borders and skate design on the reverse, the complete 396-card 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee set is presented here, led by a copy of Wayne Gretzky’s coveted first-year cardboard that has earned a respectable upper tier mid-grade mark of ENM 6 from KSA. Off-center both top-to-bottom and left-to-right, the card retains strong colours and relatively smooth edges on the sides though does see its grade come down to due corner wear all the way around and some light edge wear. With the surfaces appearing to be quite clean still, the card is housed in a KSA holder that shows a couple of light scratches over both sides worth mentioning.
For the other 395-cards, the group is found to be in a consistent high-grade range of EX-MT to NM with one exception being that of card #8, the Dryden leaders card, that is discoloured. For the notables, 160-Dionne, 175-Howe, 185-Hull (some tiny print marks and a slight diamond cut), 200-Lafleur and 230-Bossy are all seen as being in the previously mentioned EX-MT to NM range while the cards of 40-Salming (very small surface dent at top left), 125-Clarke (slight corner wear) and 150-Dryden (60-40 centering, tiny bubble at left border) are just a tad worse off, falling around EX-MT. For the checklist cards, all three are unmarked and in the EX-MT to NM condition range with the last of the three, card #346, off-center both top-to-bottom and left-to-right. The three new team logo cards and team checklist cards are all unmarked and along with the other star cards, all in a condition consistent with the rest of the set.
It must be noted that the grading standards followed by KSA may not correspond to those currently employed by PSA, BGS or SGC. The outcome of an attempted cross-over of this piece through any of those services, then, would be uncertain and cannot be guaranteed.
