Three beauty sets from the mid-1980’s, offered up are these classic O-Pee-Chee assemblies chalked full of rookie/HOF/star cards of the era which for the most part are in nice uniform EX-MT to NM condition range throughout.
Starting with a 1983-84 set that consists of O-Pee-Chee’s standard 396-card checklist, the release is led by the rookie offerings of #185 Guy Carbonneau (EX-MT to NM with 80-20 centering), #193 Mats Naslund (EX-MT to NM with 80-20 centering) and #268 Pelle Lindbergh (EX-MT to NM with 70-30 centering), The usual Gretzky grouping is included with #29 (EX-MT to NM) followed by eight others in similar condition of EX-MT to NM for all. For additional key cards, Wayne’s Oilers teammates Paul Coffey and Mark Messier are featured as cards #25 (VG – light crease top left) and #39 (EX to EX-MT – off-center plus top right corner ding) while #45 of Ray Bourque and #385 of Dale Hawerchuk are both seen as being in the scope of a similar EX-MT to NM condition. Of note, card #162 of Charlie Simmer is creased.
For the 1984-85 set, once again ringing in with a 396-card checklist and in a consistent grade vicinity of EX-MT to NM, the group includes the first-year cardboard of Steve Yzerman (EX to EX-MT – small dings to both left side corners), Pat Lafontaine (EX-MT to NM), Doug Gilmour (VG-EX – faint crease at bottom right side), Chris Chelios (EX-MT to NM) and Cam Neely (EX-MT to NM) as well card #385, the rookie scoring leaders card of Yzerman that is seen as being EX-MT to NM with 70-30 centering. Gretzky offerings total ten (10) with his card #243 in the range of EX to EX-MT while the others are all viewed as EX-MT to NM. The cards of Bourque, Coffey and Messier are all in a uniform EX-MT to NM range while the three checklist cards remain unmarked and in a condition consistent with the rest of the set.
Lastly, the 1985-86 set is led by a gorgeous EX-MT to NM copy of the key rookie cardboard of Mario Lemieux that shows 55-45 centering over the front. Mario’s rookie scoring leaders card, #262 in the set is seen as being in the EX-MT range due to a small print smudge on the reverse side. The other key rookie in the set, that of #237 picturing Al MacInnis over the front, also falls into the proximity of EX-MT to NM as do the likes of 29-Yzerman (2nd year card), 40-Bourque, 110-Lindbergh, 120-Gretzky, 177-Messier, 257-Gretzky Goal Leaders , 258-Gretzky Assist Leaders and 259-Gretzky Scoring Leaders. Out of the key cards, the lone condition exception found in that of 85-Coffey, who’s cardboard is found in the scope of EX condition due to a small right border dent. Both checklist cards remain unmarked and also in the same EX-MT to NM condition range as seen throughout the rest of the set.
