Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
Lovers of unopened material will have their interest piqued to elevated heights by this mesmerizing and thought-provoking box of hockey card packs from 1985-86, the season that collectors first saw a budding teenage superstar by the name of Mario Lemieux appear on O-Pee-Chee cards. Upon the young phenom’s 100-point rookie campaign, (a season earlier), the Penguins’ fortune began to rise and thanks to Mario’s prolific performances in ensuing years, Pittsburgh won back-to-back Stanley Cups, helping to propel ‘85-86 O-Pee-Chee cards of the Montreal native to coveted status. The 48 packs contained in this inviting box each contain seven cards, with Al MacInnis’ rookie card, four different cards of Gretzky, a Lemieux League Leader card and the card issued following Pelle Lindbergh’s death among those involved in OPC’s 264-card effort. Box bottom cards first appeared in '85-86, with the panel here picturing the young phenom Lemieux as well as Ogrodnick, Resch and Perreault, although the images are partially covered by a BBCE identifying sticker that lists this box as being an unopened example. Still showing the original tape over the front edge on the top, it has become brittle over time and come off of one side which is why the box did not receive a “tape intact” designation upon BBCE’s recent inspection. However, there is no evidence that the tape was ever tampered with. Remaining in beautiful condition, the box shows just light wear to the edges and corners with only minor surface wear being observed over the top lid (which is only partially perforated) and sides. A dazzling survivor that was kept from the hands of pack hungry youth, The prospect of a high grade Mario RC….or two make this an especially alluring piece.
