Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023

Hailing from a year in which the Ottawa Senators finished the regular season with a record of 44-23-15 and 103 points to win their first division title in franchise history, offered here is this Senators jersey worn by John Gruden that was previously issued for use to Stan Neckar during the 1998-99 season. Made by CCM, partially sewn over “Made in Canada” and size “58” tags are affixed to the inner collar while the logos of CCM and the NHL shield have been embroidered into the reverse hem. Decorated over the front with a Senators team crest that displays both textured and embroidered details, the sleeves and verso have been accented with Gruden’s number “24” in layered tackle twill numerals while matching alternate logo crests have been added over both shoulders respectively. Sporting “Gruden” spelt out in single layer black twill letters across the affixed matching nameplate, evidence of a nameplate is still visible. Hailing from the second set according to the accompanying Senators LOA, the jersey was likely made up for use by Neckar was who traded away by the team in November of 1998. Exhibiting game-use via stick marks over the front and reverse with board burns observed over both sleeves, sweat staining is present around the collar that is worth mentioning for accuracy. Of note, the Senators LOA that accompanies the piece states that the jersey was worn by Gruden on April 15th, 1999 vs the New York Rangers in Wayne Gretzky’s final game in Canada before retirement but Gruden did not play in this contest and the statement is an error.
