Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/28/2023
The brainchild of the Montreal Canadiens along with Jimmy Gardner, John Ambrose O'Brien conceived of the club as a rival to the francophone Montreal Wanderers. The industrialist and silver king also founded the NHA, and purchased the Renfrew Hockey club in 1909-10, with the Creamery Kings also known as the Millionaires, due to securing some of the game's greatest players to ungodly salaries, including Cyclone Taylor and Newsy Lalonde. Elected to the HOF as a builder in 1962, the O'Brien Trophy was awarded in both the NHA and NHL from 1910 to 1950. This photo of the 1902-03 Renfrew Junior Hockey Club features a young 17 year old O'Brien. At approx 16" x 20" including the mount, the photo shows bust-length portraits of each member, with crossed hockey sticks with team name and year. The photo and mount appear flawless, with light wear to the 19 1/2" x 23 1/2" frame.
