With a career spanning over five decades, Gordie Howe is regarded as one of the best and possibly the best to ever play the game of hockey, playing in both the NHL and WHA for a total of 32 seasons, winning four (4) Stanley Cups and two (2) AVCO Cups. Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972, we offer this stick issued to the legend for the 1967-68 season as a member of the Detroit Red Wings that has been signed 21 times by 17 members of that year’s team. A Northland Custom Pro Glass Fused model, “Howe” appears stamped onto the upper shaft, with additional stamps for the Red Wings equipment provider, Olympic Sporting Goods Co. also gracing each side of the upper shaft. Showing no evidence of ever having been taped on either the blade or handle/knob, the “Lie No 7” pattern stick remains in excellent condition throughout showing just some light marks and handling wear while the striping accent sticker still resides intact over the lower shaft. Signed by 17 on the forehand side of the shaft in ballpoint pen, those that have penned their signatures include Howe, Smith, Libett, Douglas, Watson, Crozier, Falkenberg, Bergman, Ullman, Delvecchio, Edwards (x2), Peters (x2), Godfrey, Douglas and others that cannot be identified. Most of the autographs appear light and have faded over time but can be made out if focused on while others simply cannot be. Additionally, Howe himself has signed the sign twice more in marker over both the blade on the forehand side and backhand side of the shaft with both autographs appearing strong and legible despite some minor fading from age.
Also included with the lot is a pair of vintage late-1960s/early-1970s Cooper hockey gloves that remain in good condition with no holes but have been used and show some handwritten notations as well. One of the mitts has been signed by all three members of the “Production Line” (Howe, Lindsay and Abel) in black marker with all three signatures showing well despite some fading from age and a Starside Signatures hologram is affixed to the glove that has the signatures. Lastly, A Red Wings vintage style wool jersey by Ebbets Field Flannels is included with the lot and is signed by “Mr. Hockey”, Gordie Howe. In new with tags condition and showing no flaws, the size “XL” garment is decoared with Howe’s iconic number “9” in felt over both the sleeves and verso while Detroit’s “winged wheel” logo with chainstitched details is seen over the front. Howe has signed the back number “9” with a black marker ink signature that displays well and has added the inscription “MVP – 1955” underneath in matching ink.
