Won by a Soviet squad that Team Canada coach, Don Cherry, called “The best Russian team i've ever seen”, the 1981 IIHF World Championship hosted in Gothenburg and Stockholm, Sweden would see the Canadian’s finish in fourth place. Up for grabs here, is this lot that includes a helmet attributed to have been worn by Guy Lafleur that has been signed by the whole team and a framed team photo that was presented to Team Canada players and staff.
Starting with the helmet, the CCM made skull bucket has been signed by twenty-five (25) members of that years Canadian representation with all having signed in either black or blue marker with all the signatures appearing well with only a small number showing wear or fading. Sporting CCM logos on each side and at the forehead, a CAHA sticker is found on the reverse along with those making up a red coloured number “20”, Guy’s number during the tournament. Furthermore, photos from the tournament show Lafleur wearing a helmet of matching style. Complete with all padding and the harness remaining in good condition, those that have signed include Cherry (coach), Lafleur, McDonald, Robinson, Foligno, Rogers, DeBlois, Boutette, Huber, Ferguson (coach), Ramage, Tambellini, Ogrodnick, Gartner, Long, Walter, Lukowich, Barnes, Garrett, Babych, Maruk, Myre and a couple that can’t be identified.
For the photo, the pieces measures out to full framed dimensions of 20 ½” x 16 ½” and shows a team photo of Team Canada that is matted under a cream coloured matte with a piece of paper displaying the names of all the players and staff underneath. All housed in a sleek thin black metal frame that shows just light wear to the corners, the back has “1981 Team Canada – Team + Executive Issue Only” written on it in pencil. The items originate from a member of Team Canada’s staff.
