One of only two active players to officiate an NHL game, Mickey Volcan was selected 50th overall by the Hartford Whalers in 1980 and spent a trio of seasons in Connecticut. The Edmonton native would spend the 1983-84 season with the Calgary Flames, which included 30 games with the club's CHL affiliate, Colorado. This rare Flames jersey from the two-season defunct club was worn by Volcan in 1983-84, and it is most likely a recycled Calgary jersey. SK labeling with “XL” sizing is affixed to the collar, with the vintage mesh sweater measuring-out to roughly a size 54. Styled with the classic Flames team crest in layered tackle twill, “4” appears over the sleeves and verso, with “Volcan” rubberized over the affixed nameplate. There is also an additional Sandow SK logo rubberized over the reverse hem. We should note evidence of a former nameplate, with Volcan’s crudely sewn-on. Research indicates that the jersey was also possibly worn by Randy Turnbull who wore #4 in 1982-83 with the Colorado Flames. Turnbull was the team leader for penalty minutes in 1982-83 (292 PIMs - 2nd highest in league) and the jersey does show evidence of a former penny fight strap.
The mesh jerseys with knit polyester striping were first worn by the Calgary Flames in 1982-83. Exhibiting heavy use throughout, there are numerous marks, scrapes and wear to the material, with considerable orange staining, most prominently over the lower sleeves and reverse. A circular mark also remains on the reverse from the prior use of a penny fight strap, with the bottom of the reverse number repaired.
