A veteran of over 600 National Hockey League games and a Stanley Cup champion in 2003 as a member of the New Jersey Devils, Richard Smehlik would also suit up for his home country, the Czech Republic, on numerous occasions throughout his career, winning a gold medal at the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan. Spending nine (9) of his ten (10) NHL seasons wearing Buffalo’s uniform, up for grabs here is this photo-matched Sabres third jersey worn by Smehlik during the 2001-02 season. A KOHO made offering, size “58” and “Made in Canada” flag tags are affixed to the inner collar while a KOHO patch has been added over the reverse neckline and the NHL shield has been embroidered over the reverse hem. Decorated over the front with a Sabres alternate logo crossed swords crest that features embroidered details, matching primary logo patches have been added over each shoulder. Displaying “Buffalo”, sublimated into the material over the lower front, the sleeves and verso have had Smehlik’s number “42” sewn to them in tri-layer stacked tackle twill numerals while “Smehlik” is spelt out in dual layer tackle twill letters across the affixed matching nameplate. Exhibiting good game-wear throughout via dark stick marks over the sleeves, front and reverse, board burns are also present over both sleeves with pilling and fabric snags near the bottom hem line along with sweat stains around the collar. Displaying a Sabres team tag that is serial numbered “9406” sewn inside the reverse hem, a matching Sabres COA will accompany the piece along with the original price tag. Additionally, the jersey is photo-matched with Getty Image #555341 (April 1st, 2002 vs Philadelphia) to stick marks over Smehlik's left sleeve and the stick mark through the "4" on the reverse.
