Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023

Often thought of as being the most storied franchise in the National Hockey League, the Montreal Canadiens lay claim to twenty-four Stanley Cups, roots that date back to 1909 and the fact that some of the game’s all-time greatest players have worn their famed bleu, blanc et rouge. A neat pairing is up for grabs here in the form of this 1957-58 miniature baseball bat that features the stamped signatures of that years Habs squad as well as a 1968 Montreal Forum reopening night bronze medallion. Starting with the bat, which measures 16 ¼” from end to end, shows no makers marks or branding. Sporting the stamped signatures of Montreal legends such as HOFers Maurice Richard, Boom Boom Geoffrion, Jacques Plante, Doug Harvey, Jean Beliveau, Henri Richard, Toe Blake and others over the barrel end, most of the “autographs” show well with some lighter due to varying degrees of fading seen throughout. In overall good condition with no cuts, missing pieces or gouges, some dark stains are seen in spots over the entire length of the piece with white paint specks near the end of the barrel as well as a dark smudge between the stamped autos of Floyd Curry and Tom Johnson.
For the medallion, it measures 3" in diameter and was minted in 1968 after the original Montreal Forum was expanded and had a facelift. One side has the Canadiens logo with "2 Nov. 1968, Opening of the New Forum" below, while the inscription on the reverse below an image of the new Forum's facade reads: "Presented to R. Rivet, 1968 Montreal Forum". In excellent condition with some light tarnishing worth noting, it should be pointed out that the original presentation box is not present nor included.
