Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/2/2023
A tempting example of one of the most coveted hockey rookie cards of all, that of Floral, Saskatchewan native Gordon Howe, is featured in this lot up on the block that presents a copy of Mr. Hockey’s 1951-52 Parkhurst card that has been deemed worthy of a highly respectable EX-MT 6 mark from the graders at PSA. Sporting nice colours and four corners that display with some sharpness even after all these years, it is worth noting that the corners do show some light wear and dings, the heaviest being seen at the bottom points on both the front and reverse. Displaying the image of Howe just a tad off-center to the right, the card can lay claim to being one of only 55 copies of the coveted cardboard to ever receive the grade it has while only 91 can boast ever scoring higher on over 600 submitted to PSA over the years. The star right winger's 43 goals, 43 assists and 86 points listed below his famous image produced Howe’s first of four straight NHL scoring titles and another 86 points, including 47 goals, were among Gordie's numbers the same season as his rookie cards were discovered in little Parkhurst “boxes.” The Red Wings' playoff run to the Stanley Cup in the spring of 1952 featured two four-game sweeps and has contributed to hockey observers over the years naming Howe and his '51-52 Detroit teammates as one of the most powerful teams of all-time. One of the most powerfully inspiring rookie cards of all-time will fabulously enhance your important vintage card collection. Housed in an older PSA holder, only a small number of light scratches are detected over each side.
