Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/2/2023
The last flagship O-Pee-Chee and Topps hockey sets released during the decade of the 1980s, the 1989-90 offering includes a total of 59 rookie cards in the OPC checklist and 35 in the Topps assembly, both led by the examples picturing Joe Sakic. Up for grabs here and great for both collector and investor alike, is this collection of thirteen (13) 1989-90 O-Pee-Chee and Topps hockey cards with most being rookie card offerings. Led by a group of five (5) O-Pee-Chee rookies that have all been graded by Beckett and deemed worthy of GEM MINT 9.5 marks, the quintet included the first year cardboard of Sakic (Centering 10, Corners 10, Edges 9.5, Surface 9), Brian Leetch (Centering 10, Corners 9.5, Edges 10, Surface 9), Theo Fleury (Centering 10, Corners 9.5, Edges 9.5, Surface 9.5), Trevor Linden (Centering 10, Corners 9.5, Edges 9.5, Surface 9) and Gary Roberts (Centering 9.5, Corners 9.5, Edges 9.5, Surface 9) while a copy of Sakic’s Topps RC is also included, having been given a MINT 9 by PSA. Of the remaining slabs, all are OPC offerings with six having been graded by PSA, who have given five (5) of the cards perfect marks of GEM MT 10 including the RC’s of Zalapski, Chiasson, Cullen and Ronning while a copy of Brett Hull’s card rounds out the group. The last two cards included come in the form of a Shayne Corson RC that displays a PSA MINT 9 grade while an additional copy of Gary Roberts’ rookie is included, graded by KSA and earning a perfect GEM MINT 10 mark from their graders. All the holders remain in good condition while showing some light scratches over most on both sides, the heaviest wear being observed on the KSA example.
It must be noted that the grading standards followed by KSA may not correspond to those currently employed by PSA, BGS or SGC. The outcome of an attempted cross-over of this piece through any of those services, then, would be uncertain and cannot be guaranteed.
