Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/2/2023
The man between the posts for the Montreal Canadiens between 1910 and 1925, Georges Vezina was perhaps the first real superstar goalie the game of hockey, then still in its infancy, had ever seen as he would backstop the “Flying Frenchmen” to Stanley Cup glory in both 1916 and 1924. Ultimately succumbing to tuberculosis in March of 1926, the Vezina trophy, awarded annually to the NHL’s top goaltender, is named in his honour. Still regarded as one of the greats of the game even as we come up on 100 years since his death, the sentiment has remained the same over time including in 1955 and 1960 when Parkhurst and Topps included Vezina as an “old-time” and “all-time” great in their respective sets for the year with two examples from each assembly up for grabs here in this lot. All having been graded by either PSA or KSA, the 1955-56 Parkhurst pairing includes one that has earned a PSA EX-MT 6 and another that sports a KSA EX 5 designation while the 1960-61 Topps examples display grades of PSA NM-MT 8 and NM 7 respectively. All housed in their original holders from the company’s they were graded by, all remain in good condition with just a small number of scratches that are spread out over all four being observed. Surely more affordable than his pre-war offerings, don’t let these fine specimens of one of the greatest to ever play pass you and your all-important vintage collection pass you by!
