Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023

Among the Parkhurst company's early cards, this depiction of the legendary Maurice Richard has long been considered one of the nicest to look at by many hobbyists, with the write-up on the reverse revealing that the Canadiens' star had shattered Nels Stewart's career mark of 324 goals the previous season. A wonderful rendition of Rocket Richard “on the doorstep” and attempting to add to his goal-scoring record is what hockey lovers discovered back in 1953-54 if they were lucky enough to pull an example of card #24 when opening a Parkhurst pack. Displaying the set’s commonly seen toning over the left third of the card and having it get lighter as you look more towards the right side of the cardboard, this copy of Maurice’s third year card has been deemed worthy of a high-grade NM 7 mark from the graders at PSA. Off-center top-to-bottom while still retaining good colours and showing good surfaces, corners and edges the back remains incredibly clean as well with the black text still rich and dark. Bested by only 42 of the 377 sent to PSA since the company’s inception, the holder the card is housed in remains in excellent condition with just light scratches/scuffs present over both sides, heaviest on the front. At 70 years old, this example of card #24 is one to be desired for any advanced hockey collection.
