Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
Offering options galore (and rookie cards galore!) complete sets of Parkhurst’s landmark 1951-52 hockey card issue, the first ever hockey set released by the company, are coveted in all forms with the full 105-card assembly offered here coming with an interesting backstory to note from our consignor.
The story notes that our consignor was told that he set may have originated directly from Parkhurst and was bought in the Toronto area where their offices used to be and that it might have been some type of ''test'' set due to the stats written on the back of some of the cards (33 cards in total inc. the Richard), something that was incorporated into the 1952-53 Parkhurst set, with the cards having punched holes in their upper corners otherwise remaining in pleasing condition with the exception of some cards which have damage to those upper corners because of the aforementioned punched holes (all cards are punched EXCEPT card 5). It must be noted that our consignor was unable to ever substantiate the story though. A truly intriguing mystery!
For the cards themselves, the group stands 105 strong and is paced by a trio of graded offerings that includes the key first-year cards of Maurice Richard, Terry Sawchuk and Gordie Howe, all of which has been given marks of PR 1 due to their aforementioned hole punches while the card picturing “The Rocket” also shows an “MK” (marked) qualifier due to the pencil stats on the reverse as mentioned above as well. With majority of the cards displaying beautiful colours, the edges and corners of the cards all remain in a pleasing condition and very few show creases of any kind that is worth noting as well. Including equally pleasing key cards of 1-Lach (stats on back), 3-Bouchard (stats on back), 10-Harvey (stats on back, bottom right corner ding), 14-Geoffrion (stats on back, tear top right), 19-Henry (stats on back – tear top right), 26-Quackenbush (stats on back), 29-Schmidt (stats on back, creasing at top left, bottom left corner ding), 37-Gadsby, 47-Lumley (bottom left corner ding), 48-Bentley (light crease near right hole punch), 49-Mosienko (light crease top right, bottom left light corner ding), 52-The Winning Goal (creases), 55-Kelly, 56-Lindsay (off-center left-to-right, left side corner dings), 72-Meeker (top left corner ding), 75-Broda (creases), 86-Kennedy (bottom corner dings) and 105-Rayner (creases top right), other cards with creases/defects include those of 5-Bouchard (crease), 6-MacPherson (crease), 8-Masnick (tear), 15-McNeil (top left), 16-Gamble (tear), 18-Lowe (tear), 23-Henderson (crease), 24-Fisher (crease and tear), 25-Laycoe (crease), 27-Sullivan (fold line), 30-Brown (crease), 39-Martin (crease), 42-Guidolin (crease), 45-Hucul (light crease), 46-Fogolin (light crease), 51-Babando (light crease), 57-Skov (tear), 58-Woit (corner ding), 59-Leswick (crease), 69-Reise (crease), 76-Rollins (tear), 81-Bentley (tear), 82-Thomson (tear), 88-Solinger (creases), 93-Raleigh (tears), 94-Stanley (tear), 99-Stewart (tear), 100-Hergesheimer (creases) and 105-Conacher (tear + crease).
