An inaugural member of the WHA and the first team to raise the Avco Cup, the New England Whalers were one of the few clubs - along with Winnipeg and Quebec - to last throughout the entirety of the league. Rechristened as Hartford after joining the NHL in 1979, the Whalers became the Carolina Hurricanes almost two decades later. Offered here, we have this collection of Whalers items hailing from their days in the rival league as a member of the WHA. Paced by a 1970s team equipment bag in Whalers green and yellow colours, the heavy cloth bag sports a Gerry Cosby’s label affixed to the top that is partially washed out while “New England Whalers” is stenciled to one side in yellow letters. Surviving in admirable condition with only one of the two heavy duty zippers across the top working, the zipper train in missing a few teeth while the canvas exterior displays a few holes, scuffs and stains from repeated use and life on the road as well as rusting along the feet on the bottom both inside and out while the handled remain fully functional. Also including a pair of Whalers jackets that also hail from the 1970s, both are void of any size tags or makers marks with one, done in a coaches style jacket with a collar and button snaps down the front, having had a “New England Whalers” team patch sewn over the left breast and the other, a nylon satin style with a sherpa/fleece interior, utilizing snaps down the front and featuring a built in hood, having had a Whalers logo of a similar style screened over the left breast as well. Both all green in colour, each jacket remains in good condition with no major flaws other than some small tears to the inner liner and right pocket of the jacket with the hood and size out to about a large/extra-large when compared with modern sizing. Rounding out the group is a whalers acrylic knit touque that remains in excellent condition and has a team patch sewn to the front with a pompom on top as well as a pair of Whalers construction helmets. For the helmets, one in green and one in white, each shows a Pucky the Whale logo over the front and remain in excellent condition, likely having never been worn as the original warranty and instructions papers are still found inside of each.
