Hartford’s 1st round pick at the 1984 NHL Entry Draft taken at 11th overall, Sylvain Cote would remain a staple of the Whalers blueline for a total of seven (7) years that totalled 382 of his 1171 career National Hockey League games played. Up for grabs here, is this Whalers jersey worn by Cote during both the 1988-89 Stanley Cup Playoffs vs Montreal and the 1989-90 regular season. Made by CCM, a washed out Maska Air-Knit tag displaying a handwritten number “21” identifier is affixed to the inner collar while the “small block” CCM logo has been embroidered over the reverse hem. Measuring out to roughly a size “50, the front of the jersey has been styled with the iconic Whalers team crest in layered tackle twill, the sleeves and verso have had Cote’s number “21” sewn to them in dual layer white-over-blue tackle twill numerals while “Cote” is spelt out in matching style across the top of the reverse with letters that have been sewn directly to the piece. Exhibiting heavy game-wear due to being worn in two separate seasons, stick marks coat the front, reverse and both sleeves while board burns, unrepaired holes, team repairs, and board paint transfers are also observed over the front, both sleeves, left side/reverse and left shoulder with one particularly thick/heavy team repair over the lower front measuring nearly 10” in length. Additional wear is seen via pilling on the interior. For the photo and video-matches, the jersey is video matched to a screen grab from the handshake line after Game 4 of the Prince of Wales Division Semifinals to the washed-out blue paint transfer mark to the left of the “2” on the left sleeve and a washed out stick mark through the bottom of the same “2”. It is also video-matched to a screen grab from Hartford’s October 25th, 1989 regular season game against the Quebec Nordiques to the team repair and stick mark over the left hip and the long team repair over the lower front. Lastly, Getty Image #474241342 (Undated, circa 1989) is matched to the same repair over the lower front though it is a shorter repair at the time of the image. Furthermore, Cote has signed the front of the jersey with a black ink signature that displays without issue while randomly Grant Fuhr appears to have signed the right shoulder at some point in time, also in black ink and displaying well.
