Well remembered as the first netminder to regularly don facial protection, Jacques Plante was instrumental in establishing head gear for goaltenders, perfecting models that would be used for years to come. This caramel colored “pretzel” mask, manufactured by Plante's Fibrosport company in Magog Quebec, was the first model made by the manufacturer. Sporting a rich dark gold colour with what appears to be the original period strapping harness that shows a Winn Well label and only minor soiling, a hard to make out patent/serial number is spotted behind the nose bridge section on the interior. Measuring 6 ¾” x 9 ½” across the reverse, the mask appears to have been only lightly used based on its current condition and is a beautiful surviving example that some minor marks and abrasions but remains structurally sound and crack free. With hardened over time padding present on the interior over both eyebrows and the left cheek, the name of the former owner is penned to the middle strap of the harness to make mention of for accuracy’s sake.
