A strong rookie card roster and a nifty design has long made Topps’ 1965-66 puck effort popular among collectors, with numerous important elements to fill you in on, beginning with the six (6) cards that have been freshly graded by PSA. The key first year cardboard of Ed Giacomin leads the way having earned a NM-MT 8 while the likes of Gerry Cheevers, Yvan Cournoyer and Phil Esposito have earned marks of NM 7, EX-MT 6 and EX 5 on their respective rookie offerings. The last two cards housed in cozy PSA holders come in the form of the set’s two checklist cards, #66 and #121 in the 128-card assembly, with both garnering a mark of EX 5. The rest of the cards, raw and ungraded, are found in a fairly uniform condition range of EX to EX-MT with the key cards of 12-Sawchuk, 59-Hull (60-40 centering), 71-Richard (very light black surface “snow”) and 79-Horton (small amount of wear at the top left corner) all found to be in that condition scope as well. Card #6 of Jean Beliveau is seen as being in the vicinity of EX condition (slight print line and light corner wear) and is joined in close proximity by 55-Hall (90-10 centering and slight wear to the top corners), 77-Bower (surface scratch on right side and a wax stain), 108-Howe (light corner wear) and 122-Howe (light surface wear and 80-20 centering) who all show in the range of VG-EX to EX. The last of the notables include cards #60 of Stan Mikita (VG to VG-EX – small stain on the front) and #81 of Frank Mahovlich (VG – glue stain on the reverse). Ten (10) of the cards are badly off-center including 8-Provost, 23-Seiling, 34-Oliver, 50-McDonald, 51-Henderson, 73-Backstrom, 74-Roberts, 89-Wilson, 106-Bassen and 111-Murphy while cards showing wear of note include 2-Worsley (corner stain), 27-Hadfield (faded and off-center), 39-Dillabough (crease), 52-Martin (surface scratch), 56-Pilote (surface scratch) 83-Jeffrey (light bend but no crease) and 93-Nevin (print blotch). Sure to be pleasing for all our vintage enthusiasts, plenty of enjoyment can still be had with these colorful blasts from the past.
