Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023

Offering options galore (and rookie cards galore!) complete sets of Parkhurst’s landmark 1951-52 hockey card issue, the first ever hockey set released by the company, are coveted in all forms with the full 105-card assembly offered here paced by twenty-two (22) freshly graded PSA offerings including the key rookie card of Maurice Richard that has earned a very respectable mark of EX 5. The rest of the slabs feature eighteen (18) first-year card examples including EX-MT 6’s of Gadsby, Lumley, Pronovost, Meeker, Flaman and Stanley, EX 5’s of Geoffrion, Bentley and Kennedy, VG-EX 4’s of Harvey, Henry, Quackenbush, Mosienko, Kelly, Lindsay and Sawchuk and finally, VG 3’s of McNeil and Devechhio. The last three (3) PSA graded cards include a trio of non-rookie cards of Elmer Lach, Turk Broda and Max Bentley, who have all garnered marks of VG-EX 4 for their cards.
Of note, also scrutinized by PSA was a Gordie Howe RC, with card #66 not meeting minimum size requirement standards and not in a holder. (This designation does not apply to cards that are deemed trimmed or altered but is an indication that the card was cut short or narrow by the company at the time of production. Veteran hobbyists with much ’51-52 Parkie experience are aware that the Howe rookie often measures narrow). Card #52 displaying the image of Bill Barilko’s 1951 Stanley Cup winning goal has met the same fate and we would put both cards in the grade range of EX to EX-MT as each show just very light wear to their respective corners.
For the raw cards, most display with excellent appeal and the set includes a group of twenty-eight (28) that fall into the scope of EX to EX-MT condition after inspection and features those of 5-Olmstead RC, 6-RC, 9-RC, 13-RC, 18-RC, 20-RC, 21-RC, 22-RC, 23-RC, 27-Sullivan RC, 28-Dumart, 30-RC, 32-RC, 33-RC, 41-RC, 42-RC, 46-RC, 53, 54-RC, 59-RC, 60-RC, 69-RC, 78-RC, 79-RC, 82-Thomson, 83-RC, 84-Smith RC and 85-RC.
Cards displaying the characteristics that put them into the category of VG-EX to EX total forty-nine (48 different cards are included along with an extra copy of card #51 showing Pete Babando) with only a pair of creases to make note of (card #76 of Al Rollins and #105 of Jim Conacher). #’s of the cards include; 2-RC, 3-Bouchard RC, 7-RC, 8-RC, 11-Mosdell RC, 12-RC, 16-RC, 17-RC, 24-RC, 25-Laycoe RC, 34-RC, 35-RC, 38-RC, 39-RC, 40-Bodnar RC, 43-RC, 44-RC, 50-Conacher, 51-RC, 57-RC, 58-RC, 62-RC, 64-Abel, 65-RC, 67-RC, 70-Watson RC, 71-RC, 73-RC, 74-RC, 76-Rollins RC (light crease on reverse), 77-RC, 87-Sloan RC, 88-RC, 89-RC, 90-RC, 91-RC, 92-RC, 93-RC, 95-RC, 96-RC, 97-RC, 98-RC, 99-RC, 100-RC, 101-RC, 102-RC, 103-RC, 104-Rayner RC and 105-Conacher (light crease at bottom right corner on front).
