After a season without hockey cards, kids and others must have been excited/smiling when they first saw Parkhurst packs in stores in 1957, with the Canadiens and Maple Leafs featured and Maurice Richard appearing on wax pack display boxes. Sporting a 50-card checklist, up for grabs here is this complete assembly of Parkhurst’s 1957-58 hockey set that is paced by ten (10) freshly graded PSA offerings. Led by the carboard of HOFers Henri Richard (RC – VG 3), Frank Mahovlich (RC – VG-EX 4), Maurice Richard (EX-MT 6) and Jacques Plante (NM 7), the other six slabs house the cards of George Armstrong (EX 5), Ed Chadwick (EX 5), Jean Beliveau (VG-EX 4), Charlie Hodge (EX-MT 6), Bob Baun (RC - EX 5) and Tim Horton (EX-MT 6). For the forty raw ungraded cards that make up the rest of the set, those found to be in the range of EX to EX-MT total eleven (11) and include the likes of M10-St. Laurent, M13, M20-Curry, M25-Olmstead Beats Chadwick, T4-Pulford (RC), T15-Harris, T16 (RC), T18 (RC), T19 (RC), T24 (RC) and T25-Reay (coach). Those in the vicinity of EX total twenty-two (22) but ten (10) have wax stains over their front and six (6) show toning to a portion of their edges. Those included are #’s; M6-Johnson, M7-Pronovost (wax stain on front), M12-Provost (wax stain on front), M14-Moore (wax stain on front), M16-Blake (coach), M19-Olmstead, M21-Canadiens On Guard, M22-Barry Cullen Scores (wax stain on front), M23-Puck and Sticks High (wax stain on front), T3-Duff (wax stain on front), T5-Sloan, T6 (toning), T7 (toning), T8-James (RC - wax stain on front), T9-Cullen (toning), T10-Smith (wax stain on front), T11-Morrison (wax stain on front), T12, T13 (wax stain on front), T14-Conacher (toning), T21-Cullen (RC – toning) and T23 (RC – toning). Rounding out the set, cards in the range of VG-EX to EX include #M2 of Boom Boom Geoffrion (handwritten “5” on front), #M8 of Don Marshall and #M9 of Jean Guy Talbot (wax stain on the front) while carboard in the neighbourhood of VG to VG-EX features #M1-Harvey (crease at top right corner, edge dings and toning), #M11-Goyette (small creases), #M18-Bonin (scratches and wax stain on the front) and lastly, #M24-Geoffrion Sidesteps Chadwick (large heavy crease through the middle. Overall, a wonderful set from the golden era of the National Hockey League that is sure to enhance your vintage collection.
