Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
Appropriating the fame of the renowned Blueshirts, numerous hockey teams throughout the 20th century borrowed the moniker "Rangers", with most also utilizing the patriotic red, white and blue colour scheme of the NHL club. We offer a circa 1950s "Rangers" wool sweater. Measuring out to roughly a size 44, "Rangers" is sewn diagonally to the chest in thick layered individual red felt letters with white trim, with large "14" to the verso in matching material. The front collar appears customized, converted to a tie-neck during the sweater's period of use. Although similar in style to what the New York Rangers wore in the late-1920s and throughout the 1930s, this example dates from a later period (circa-1950s) and is not a New York franchise jersey, but is most likely from a minor team of some type. Numerous teams were called "Rangers" during the era, but we couldn't match the style to any specific team. Regarding condition, there is heavy wear and fading to the material throughout, with some very minor soiling to the collar. Team repairs are also present, with examples situated on the front (1), sleeves (7) and to each armpit.
