This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/2/2023
The O-Pee-Chee company’s first ever hockey card release is featured here, totalling 48-cards (along with twelve extras) that include a myriad of star and first-year carboard offerings of some of hockey’s greatest names. Paced by a group of 15 freshly graded offerings recently received back from PSA headquarters, the lead quartet includes the key cardboard of Eddie Shore (RC – PSA VG 3), Howie Morenz (PSA VG-EX 4), King Clancy (PSA EX 5) and Charlie Conacher (RC – PSA VG-EX 4) while the other slabs house the examples of Roy Worters (RC – PSA GOOD 2), Nels Stewart (RC – PSA VG 3), Lorne Chabot (RC – PSA VG 3), George Hainsworth (RC – PSA VG-EX 4), Ching Johnson (RC – PSA VG-EX 4), Dit Clapper (RC – PSA EX 5), Harold Oliver (RC – PSA EX 5), Syd Howe (RC – PSA EX 5), Ace Bailey (RC – PSA EX-MT 6), Harvey Jackson (RC – PSA EX-MT 6) and Bill Cook (RC – PSA EX-MT 6).
For the raw ungraded cards, many show evidence of having been placed into an OPC album at one time due to lines on the corners (some worse than others) though it doesn’t take away from these beauties’ appeal. Overall, we count six (6) cards that appear in the condition vicinity of VG-EX to EX including; 28-Bourgeault (RC - light edge dings), 29-Himes (RC – off-center), 30-Sheppard (RC), 36-Keeling (RC – left edge dings), 37-Murdoch (RC – light corner and edge wear) and 42-Sorrell (RC – light corner and edge wear plus a small crease at bottom right corner). For those in range of VG to VG-EX mostly showing corner and edge wear along with toning, examples present include 1-Cox (RC), 2-Lamb (RC – top right corner ding and crease on reverse), 4-Doraty (RC – light stains front and reverse), 11-Levinksy (RC), 12-Primeau (RC – light paper loss and glue residue on reverse), 16-Heller (RC), 19-Gagnon (RC – light crease on reverse), 27-Weiland (RC – photo album evidence on front and reverse), 32-Day (mark on back and creases on the front), 35-Cotton (RC – photo album evidence on front and reverse), 40-Emms (RC – light soiling on front), 43-Phillips (RC), 44-McVeigh (RC – photo album evidence on front and reverse), 47-Wasnie (RC – creases on reverse) and 48-Mondou (RC).
The last group of cards, rounding out the set, are those found to in the scope of G (Good) condition with most slowing just a bit worse off with similar wear to what is noted above. The group features the likes of 5-Hitchman (light photo album evidence), 7-Galbraith (RC – spot of paper loss on reverse), 10-Horner (RC – light soiling and rounded corners), 14-Patterson (RC), 17-Somers (RC – light staining on both the front and reverse), 20-Lepine (RC – rounded corners), 21-Larochelle (RC – top left corner crease, light soiling bottom reverse edge and rounded corners), 22-Mantha (RC – light soiling and rounded corners), 25-Finnegan (rounded/dinged corners), 26-Touhey (RC – surface wear and multiple creases), 41-McInenly (RC – rounded corners, surface soiling and a crease) and 46-Leduc (RC – surface wear and a crease). As mentioned above, twelve (12) extra cards are included with examples of Nels Stewart and Bill Phillips the best of the dozen, seen as being in the grade range of VG-EX to EX, again with album evidence present, while additional cards of Chabot, Gagnon, Keeling, Cook (x2 – one with paper loss on the back), and Sorrell as observed as being VG to VG-EX and cards of Himes (album evidence), Sheppard (crease), Murdoch (surface staining) and McVeigh (pen mark) are down in the scope of G (Good) condition. A swell array of colors and numerous hockey legends will be coming your way after you’re the higher bidder here – and you’ll get to cross off a pre-war set from your list...all in one swoop!
