Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/2/2023
Mario Lemieux was in his second NHL season and the Edmonton Oilers were two-time defending Stanley Cup champions when O-Pee-Chee released its 1985-86 hockey card effort, consisting of 264 total cards, this offered near complete set largely remains in the EX-MT to NM condition range with a small number of exceptions that fall between EX to EX-MT instead due to small amounts of corner/edge wear and dings that are observed. Paced by the key first-year cardboard of Mario that falls at #9 in the checklist, the example included with this assembly has been recently returned from PSA headquarters where it received a high-grade mark of NM 7. Missing card #262, Lemieux’s rookie scoring leaders offering, it should be noted that the set is not spared from the rough cut edges or centering issues that plaque the O-Pee-Chee releases of the era. Led by a key card contingent that includes the likes of 29-Yzerman (off-center and light black surface “snow”), 40-Bourque, 110-Lindbergh, 120-Gretzky (off-center and very light corner wear) and 177-Messier (slightly off-center and very light corner wear) all in the aforementioned condition range of EX-MT to NM with a couple possibly better, the rookie card of #237 Al MacInnis also presents in the same grade range as well cards 258-Gretzky Assist Leaders and 259-Gretzky Scoring Leaders. Rounding out the notables, cards #85 of Paul Coffey (corner wear all the way around, reverse top edge ding and surface dents/imperfections) and #257 displaying the previous year’s goal scoring leaders (a couple of small surface scratches and a bottom right corner ding) fall closer to the scope of EX to EX-MT condition. Finally, both checklist cards remain unmarked and in the neighbourhood of EX-MT to NM.
Additionally, a group of approx. 80 extra cards of the same release are also included with the set, found in the same grade ranges as the cards making up the near complete assembly detailed above with the same flaws seen and including stars such as Glenn Anderson, Rick Vaive, Michel Goulet, Scott Stevens, Dino Ciccarelli and copies of the checklist cards as well. A wonderful trip down memory lane for our lucky winning bidder, it should also be noted that all the included cards show a humidity “bow” as well.
