Found in O-Pee-Chee packs that contained 14 cards and that cost kids/collectors 20 cents during the 1979-80 season were blue-bordered cards like these, with that of Wayne Gretzky surely coveted by season’s end as the scrawny teenage whiz kid from Brantford, Ontario proved he could “play with the big boys”…and how! Nobody totaled more points than Wayne and now no other hockey rookie card carries more appeal among the hobby’s masses than iconic #18, offered here having recently received a mark of FR 1.5 at PSA headquarters, unfortunately suffering from corner wear/dings and creases that surely are what keep this copy from scoring higher. he accompanying 395-cards we would rate in a much higher condition neighbourhood with most of the examples falling into the range of EX-MT and EX-MT to NM in our opinions with no major flaws and most showing just light corner wear, centering issues and the rough-cut edges that O-Pee-Chee releases of the era are known for. For the key cards, those of 1-Goal Leaders (light corner wear/small dings), 150-Howe, 185-Hull and 230-Bossy are all in the range of EX-MT while #’s 81-Winnipeg, 82-Edmonton and 163-Hartford along with the three checklists (all unmarked) are all seen as being a bit better, in the scope of EX-MT to NM. The cards of Canadiens teammates Ken Dryden and Guy Lafleur, #’s 150 and 200 respectively, see their stock tumble down to the VG-EX range from the higher grades due to wax residue on their surfaces. Of note, the cards making up the set all have a slight humidity “bow” to them that is worth noting. Additionally, also included with the set is a group of approx. 400 extra cards that included a small number of stars and some minor stars as well such as Gainey, Vachon, Shutt (low-grade), Goring, Nystrom and others with numerous doubles also being included that are largely in the mid-grade range of VG up to VG-EX to EX with some better and worse examples included as well. Lastly, a trio of original 79-80 OPC pack wrappers are also included (locker and camera promo offer variations) that display well with bright colours while showing numerous fold lines and creases as well as small tears as is common. A forever fan-favourite in the hobby, we’re sure our lucky winning bidder will be pleased with this iconic assembly.
