Though Habs fans immediately identify No. 10 with one of the storied team’s icons (Guy! Guy! Guy!), Hall of Fame defenseman Tom Johnson also wore that number with distinction for the Montreal Canadiens. And 10 suited Johnson perfectly because he appeared in an astounding 10 straight Stanley Cup finals with the Canadiens from 1951-60! Johnson won the Cup six times in that span, including Montreal’s record five straight championships from 1955-56 to 1959-60, and he claimed the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s best defenseman in 1958-59. This Johnson No. 10 Canadiens jersey was most likely made for him to wear for an unknown team event in the 1990s after the number was retired for Guy Lafleur in February 1985. There is no tagging inside the collar; the jersey measures a size 50. It has a fight strap and embroidered CCM and NHL logos on the right rear hem. There is a small black mark on the back of the lower left sleeve and another on the top front of the left sleeve near the sleeve and yoke seams, and there is a faint mark at the top of the “1” on the back, indicating it may indeed have been worn by Johnson, who played one game for Montreal as a 19-year-old in 1947-48 and played the next 856 of his 978 NHL games with the Canadiens from his 1950-51 rookie campaign through 1962-63. Rejean Houle signed the accompanying Montreal Canadiens LOA, which describes the jersey as a “1990s Johnson red team-issued jersey”.
