Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023

Lost for the most part to the annals of time, the American game of ice polo battled ice hockey for preeminence during the late 19th century. Played with a shorter and rounded-blade stick, a ball instead of a puck was also utilized. In the end, the popularity of ice hockey won over, and caused the death of ice polo. We have a rare circa 1890s ice polo stick. At just over 39" in length, with the typical curved blade, the stick is heavy for its size and appears to be made of possibly hickory - which was also used in the 19th century for the production of baseball bats. The stick shows use and wear, but remains uncracked and ideal for display. From the Brent Sobie antique hockey and baseball collection.
