Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/28/2023
An extreme rarity as some of the oldest surviving skates made specifically for hockey, these circa 1890s “Montreal Hockey” model skate blades were produced by master maker Henry Boker. Top of the line models during the late-1890s/early-1900s, as well as some of the most expensive at $5.00 per pair, with these the absolute highest quality from the company. The skates blades are stamped "Henry Boker's Montreal Hockey" and feature an engraved arrow to signify extra fine quality and finish, welded and hand-tempered, with crucible steel hand-tempered runners. Attached to wooden platforms with some of the remaining thick leather strapping, the platforms were possibly homemade, with dating to the late 19th century before the use of hockey boots became fashionable. The unique models show heavy use with surface wear throughout, and we should note these are the earliest hockey skates we have ever offered. From the Brent Sobie antique hockey and baseball collection.
