Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023

Splendid numbers and fabulous colors galore contribute to this tantalizing assembly of 1954-55 Topps hockey cards, worthy of PSA’s Set Registry’s Current Finest List and often thought of as one of the most beautiful sets of all-time. Admirable in just about any condition are cards from Topps’ landmark inaugural hockey issue, despite the checklist being void of the stars playing on teams north of the border in Toronto and Montreal, with the eye appeal and allure elevated to great heights by these gorgeous high-grade examples. Led in value by the likes of Gordie Howe and legendary goaltender Terry Sawchuk, the offerings capturing the legendary duo are two of only five (5) cards to fall short of garnering at least a NM 7, sitting just below at EX-MT+ 6.5 for Howe and EX-MT 6 for Sawchuk respectively. Nevertheless, cards of top end HOFers are a plenty, including those that have earned marks of NM 7, such as Gump Worsley, Red Kelly, Ted Lindsay, Alex Delvecchio and Bill Mosienko with 18 other accompanying figures also being deemed worthy of the same mark from the graders for a total of 23 cards carrying NM 7 designations. Despite not having the same firepower as its counterparts, the group of 32 cards graded NM-MT 8 makes up over half of the set and includes the likes of HOFers Andy Bathgate, Allan Stanley, Bill Gadsby, Bill Quackenbush and Marcel Pronovost along with the rookie cards of Doug Mohns and Don McKenney. The other three cards unable to reach the NM 7 plateau include two in close proximity, having been slabbed as EX-MT 6’s, in the form of 3-Howell and 32-Henry, while a lone EX 5 closes out the set, that being the card of 60-Milt Schmidt. After tabulation, the stirring ensemble has a set rating of 7.076, the same as its GPA with top pop bonuses mark, with details on the PSA Set Registry telling of twelve (12) cards that have been edged by only one, two or three examples on their respective “lines” of the PSA Population Report. Issued the season that the Red Wings claimed Lord Stanley’s silverware for the fourth time in six years and fascinating indeed is this offering, sure to be a feather in the cap of its new owner. The PSA holders exhibit the odd intermittent scratch/scuff, with however each card/holder pleasant and in many cases a privilege to hold and behold while sure to be pleasing to our astute winning bidder.
