Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/28/2023
Issued in Canada, Imperial Tobacco’s 1912 C56 set is represented here by 28 men who were involved in the International League in that loop’s first season, with teams from Montreal and Toronto joined by six U.S.-based clubs. The headliner is Joe Kelley, a former star outfielder of the Baltimore Orioles teams of the 1890s and who managed Toronto to the International League pennant the year cards like this were released. The offered cards were removed from a scrapbook, with most exhibiting back damage of varying degrees. The Kelley card misspells his name as “Kelly” and has a side-to-side crease, along with smidgeons of paper loss on the reverse to consider. The best of the rest are five that are difficult to deduce that they were once pasted; most are crease-free and VG-EX in appearance and include 22-Rudolph, 32-Smith (small corner crease), 33-Lush, 48-Batch and 84-Yeager. There are then 16 with minor paper loss that, for the most part, does not affect any of the text; #s 7, 12, 24, 25, 30, 36, 51, 54, 58, 61, 63, 70, 76, 80, 83 and 86. Completing are six with paper loss that renders parts of the text illegible; 9, 50, 67, 72, 79 and 87. Overall, the cards display quite well for lower grade examples, with only a half-dozen featuring either a side-to-side, top-to-bottom or obvious crease. An opportunity to secure 28 of the (90-card) set with one swoop awaits.
