Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/28/2023
Two of the great Montreal Canadiens of all-time and frankly two of the greatest to ever play in the National Hockey League at their respective positions, Jean Beliveau and Jacques Plante would win a combined total of 16 Stanley Cups during their playing careers. Up on the auction block here, is this lot of seven (7) cards of the two HOFers ranging in years from 1961-62 to 1969-70 from companies such as Parkhurst, O-Pee-Chee, and Topps that have all been all been graded with six Beckett graded examples and one KSA. Starting with the Beliveau offerings, the group is spearheaded by Big Jean’s 1961-62 Parkhurst released that shows toning over both sides and wear to all four corners with a ding on the bottom left and has been deemed an EXCELLENT+ 5.5 by Beckett. Other cards include #89 of Jean from the always popular 1963-64 Parkhurst set that has earned an EXCELLENT 5 while a 1965-66 Topps offering is the last Beliveau card included, earning an EX-MT+ with subgrades of Centering 6, Corners 6.5, Edges 7 and Surface 9.
The Plante cards start off in the same way as the Beliveau’s with not one but two 1961-62 issues of the trailblazing netminder included with one earning a mark of EXCELLENT+ 5.5 from Beckett and the other a ENM 6 from KSA. Of note, the KSA label incorrectly lists the card as being from the 1962-63 set. Following that, and no longer shown in the famed red, white and blue of Les Canadiens but instead of the New York Rangers, is Plante on the front of his 1963-64 Topps card with this particular copy designated another EXCELLENT+ 5.5 example. Last but not least, Plante is seen on card #207 of the 1969-70 O-Pee-Chee set along with batterymate Glenn Hall with this one celebrating their Vezina win from the year before and receiving a VG-EX 4 from Beckett. All the holders remain in good condition, showing just light scratches/scuffs, the worst of which is seen on the KSA example.
It must be noted that the grading standards followed by KSA may not correspond to those currently employed by PSA, BGS or SGC. The outcome of an attempted cross-over of this piece through any of those services, then, would be uncertain and cannot be guaranteed.
