Operating for 56 years between 1945 and 2001, the International Hockey League (IHL) served as the National Hockey League’s (NHL) alternate farm system to the American Hockey League (AHL). Offered here, is this collection of eleven (11) official game pucks for IHL teams dating from the 1960s and 1970s with examples present for the Port Huron Flags, Port Huron Wings, Columbus Checkers, Fort Wayne Komets and Muskegon Mohawks. Dominated by Port Huron based biscuits that total seven (7), examples are present from the years 1962-63 (Nestor Johnson – IHL Reverse – x2), 1965-71 (CCM – IHL Reverse – x2 including one with the rare error reverse logo that has been screened backwards), 1973-74 (CCM3 slug – Orange front with orange shield reverse – x2), and one presumed to be from 1974 that shows the Flags logo and old style IHL shield reverse that is on a Gladding CZ2 slug but is unaccounted for when referenced with Becker’s Puck Guide. Other examples include a 1965-71 Columbus Checkers puck, two 1965-71 Fort Wayne Komets pucks and a 1973-75 Muskegon Mohawks puck.
For condition, most show surface wear and scratches along with light cuts and chips over the sides and edges and toning to the screened on logos. The 1962-63 Flags examples both have poor condition crests over each side with one showing numerous cuts and pieces missing along the face edges while one of the 1973-74 examples sports a deep gash on its side but both of the pucks from that season show only light wear to the logos, a similar situation being seen on the 1965-71 examples as well with one having chips, dents and cuts. The mystery 1974 shows light cuts on the side as well as a couple of small chips and dents and light wear to the logos. The final four include a good condition grade for the Columbus examples while for the Komets slugs one shows surface wear and only a couple of light cuts and small chips as well as some light logo wear. The other one shows large pieces missing out of the reverse face (Komets logo side) with wear to both logos and chips/light chips to the side. Lastly, the Mohawks cookie sports logos with light wear but heavy surface wear along with numerous fairly deep cuts and chips over the side and edges of both faces.
