Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/28/2023
Indeed, a treat it must have been almost one hundred years ago to purchase sweets made my Montreal’s Maple Crispette Company and discover a little card picturing a hockey player inside the package. Young stars Howie Morenz and Aurele Joliat, along with aging veteran Georges Vezina had led the Canadiens, the previous season, to the NHL title and then the Stanley Cup championship with two-game sweeps of Vancouver and Calgary and lead this delectable offering. Recently inspected by PSA were the cards of the three, with Joliat (VG-EX 4) and Morenz (VG 3) superior to the creased Vezina example (FR 1.5) and joined by a raw contingent dominated by cards in the G, G+ and VG range. Crudely cut and with various sizes, the cards feature Hall of Famers Newsy Lalonde and Punch Broadbent with small caramel-looking stains and fellow HOFers 2-Clint Benedict, 21-Billy Burch and 22-Shorty Green, with 1-Dunc Munro RC, 19-Sam Rothschild RC and first-year Boston Bruins also notable. Five examples are multi-creased low grade condition exceptions; 8-Harris RC, 9-Cooper RC, 11-Boucher, 16-Cain RC and 26-Langlois RC, while cards not present are 5-Skinner RC, 6-Cook RC and 7-Herberts RC, as well as the rare short-printed 15-Sprague Cleghorn issue. Plenty of star and rookie card action, along with some bragging rights, await the high bidder here.
