Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/2/2023
Heavily debated (and impossible in the eyes of many) as to whether or not they were actually issued in 1923 as currently archived, Bobby Burrell points out in his ultra-informative Vintage Hockey Collector books that the backs of the 1923 Maple Crispette ball cards offer consumers free baseball equipment in exchange for a complete baseball set (of 30 cards) but also states that an assortment with hockey player cards would also be redeemable. With the Maple Crispette hockey cards issued during the 1924-25 season, the baseball cards must have come out in 1925 and not 1923 as currently archived. Interesting indeed and sure to pique the interest of many, up for grabs here is this collection of thirty-four (34) 1923 Maple Crispette V117 baseball cards including those of HOFers Collins, Hoyt, Sewell, Harris, McKechnie, Pennock, Roush and Johnson (3). Consisting of 24 out of 30 cards in the checklist, the sought after cardboard rectangles each measure 1 3/8” x 2 1/4” each and were inserted into products issued by the Maple Crispette Candy Company of Montreal, Canada. A fascinating find, the cards display in an overall condition range of G to VG with a few showing better at VG-EX. Starting with those picturing men that have been inducted into the hallowed halls of Cooperstown, specimens showing black and white images of Eddie Collins (G to VG – scuff/eraser mark at the bottom border), Waite Hoyt (G to VG – light scuff at the right border and a few small stains), Joe Sewell (VG to VG-EX – corner wear), Bucky Harris (VG light stains to the front), Bill McKechnie (G to VG – stain at the bottom left that shows on both the front and back), Herb Pennock (VG – light discoloration at the bottom), Edd Roush (VG) and Walter Johnson (x3 including a G to VG with a top left corner crease, a VG and a G that has a crease and a scuff present) are included. The rest of the cards, in the same consistent G to VG range stated above include #’s 2-Traynor, 5-Fohl (x3), 6-Summa, 9-Dolan, 10-Bassler, 11-Dauss, 13-Johnson (x2), 14-Wingo, 16-Statz, 17-Meusel, 18-Jacobson, 20-Bohne, 23-Peckinpaugh, 24-Ruel (x3), 26-Stephenson (x4) and 29-Wambsganss with only the cards of Traynor and Wambsganss showing any creasing.
