Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/3/2023
Inviting pre-war scarcities are offered up here, with cards like these offered to fans who attended Providence Reds games during the 1936-37 season, one that saw the famous "Kraut Line" skate for the Rhode Island team, a member of the International American Hockey League which became known as the AHL a few years later. Very few of the (blank-backed) cards survived, with the PSA Population Report informing that the grading company has examined and slabbed just 45 cards since its inception. Printed on carboard stock and measuring 3 ½” x 2 ¼”, the team roster at the time consisted of 23 players but it is unknown how many cards comprise the set, with just eleven (11) known to this day. Offered here, is this near complete set (7/11) of 1936-37 Providence Reds cards including examples of HOFers Milt Schmidt, Bobby Bauer and Porky Dumart. Of the three important HOFer offerings, Schmidt’s card is seen in the G to VG range with red stains on the borders and reverse while Bauer’s is closer to EX with light discoloring on the back left. Porky Durmart’s cardboard is around VG-EX to EX. The final four cards include those of Paddy Byrne (EX), Bert McInenly (G to VG – light red stain on left border as well as a residue stain, light foxing over both the front and back), Art Lesieur (VG-EX – Light discoloring on the bottom) and Gus Rivers (VG-EX to EX – light corner wear).
