From one Hall of Famer to another, this Pittsburgh Penguins signed captain's jersey was gifted to Ray Bourque by Mario Lemieux after the Boston Bruins played their last game of the season vs Pittsburgh, on April 13, 1997 at the Fleet Center. Lemieux was honored before the game and was presented with a chair from the old Boston Garden at center ice by Bourque. The Penguins wore their black jerseys in that game (not the white offered here). Center Ice and Starter labeling is affixed to the collar along with a “58-R” swatch (a handwritten “66 c” also appears), with embroidered Starter and NHL crests over the reverse hem. Styled with the Pens team crest in use from 1992 to 1999, “66” is sewn to the sleeves and verso in layered tackle twill, with “Lemieux” across the affixed nameplate in matching material. The jersey has folded Starter and NHL shield logos on the hem which are clearly showing on a DVD from the April 3rd 1997 game vs the Hartford Whalers. Images from that game also show the correct placement of numbers, captain's "C" and nameplate placement. Images of Lemieux in the playoffs show him wearing a different jersey so this is most likely the last white regular season jersey worn prior to his first retirement. Sporting a few marks over the lower front and left cuff, the jersey exhibits light to moderate use, with a few small stains on the reverse. Lemieux has signed the second reverse "6", with the signature displaying nicely. From Ray Bourque's personal collection, his signed LOA will accompany.
